What is WordPress?
WordPress is an open-source content management system (CMS). That means it provides a secure, well-maintained framework for managing your website’s content; text, images, pages, posts, events, and more. All through an easy-to-use dashboard.
It’s not a “template builder” or a drag-and-drop toy. It’s a mature, professional platform that’s used by everyone from small charities to major global brands.
Why do we use it?
We use WordPress because it aligns with our principles – open, flexible, and community-driven. It also helps to keep project costs reasonable for our clients, and offers more freedoms in the long run.
This isn’t to say that it’s the right choice for everyone, however. There’s a whole galaxy of options for developing your next website or web application, and we’ll always discuss these options with you to make sure you’re considering the most appropriate ones.
We’re aware some people may have had less than positive experiences with WordPress in the past, but like any tool, we are convinced this is more to do with how it has been configured as opposed to something about the platform itself.

What our clients think
A better WordPress experience
Over the years, we developed internal tools to make this process easier for our team and our clients. Agency Turbo was born out of necessity; to streamline our process, improve site builds, and ultimately make WordPress a more user-friendly platform – not just for end users, but for clients too.
We now offer this powerful tool to other agencies, to replace multiple common plugins with only the light and performant code you need.
Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve used WordPress before and it was slow / unreliable / full of plugins - how is yours different?
We completely understand. Occasionally, a client comes to us after a frustrating WordPress experience.
WordPress is a tool, so your experience will very much depend on how it’s used, rather than the tool itself. The difference is in how it’s built.
We use lightweight, modular code and only essential, reputable plugins.
Our builds are optimised for performance, stability, and ease of use, so your site loads fast, stays secure, and is simple to manage.
Will I be able to edit my website myself?
Yes. That’s one of the best things about WordPress.
You’ll have access to edit your own pages, content, images, and posts without touching code.
We also tailor the editor interface so you only see the tools you actually need – no clutter, complexity or site-breaking settings.
Isn’t WordPress insecure?
Not inherently. WordPress itself is very secure. It’s maintained by a large, active development community.
Security issues usually arise from outdated plugins or poor hosting, not the platform itself.
We provide managed hosting options with robust security, and offer maintenance plans to keep your WordPress installation up-to-date and protected.
Can WordPress handle a large or complex site?
Absolutely. WordPress scales very well. It powers some of the world’s largest media and membership platforms.
With good hosting, caching, and a sensible architecture, it’s capable of handling high-traffic, feature-rich sites with ease.
What about e-commerce or membership sites?
WordPress integrates seamlessly with WooCommerce for online shops and can support a wide range of membership and subscription systems.
We’ve built everything from simple product stores to advanced donation and event platforms that support GiftAid – all with the same focus on performance, accessibility, and security.
Do you provide updates and maintenance?
Yes, but it’s an opt-in service only available to clients who have sites built or hosted with us.
We keep the hosting platform itself up to date automatically, and you can choose a maintenance plan to cover WordPress core, plugin, and theme updates as often as you need.
This keeps your site stable, secure, and supported.
Will my site look like a template?
Not at all. Every website we design is bespoke.
We might use WordPress as the foundation, but everything on top, from layout and visuals to interactions and structure is custom-designed around your brand and your users.
Can you fix or take over an existing WordPress site?
No, we don’t provide this service as it would mean accepting the technical debt of other developers.
We can audit your current site to identify what’s working, what’s not, and how to improve it, but if you want us to implement the changes, you’d have to commission a new site with us.
