Going interplanetary – Exploring IPFS and Web 3 hosting

Not long ago, we tried to explain the defining characteristics of Web 3.0, in an effort to bring some clarity to our clients. As the web evolves, we need to evolve too, and understanding the cutting edge is critical if you want a competitive advantage when the time comes. Despite the fact that many people have jumped on the bandwagon and are throwing out buzzwords like ‘blockchain’ and ‘NFTs’, one of the key findings of our Web 3 analysis was that the next generation of the web will be open, trustless and permissionless.

Our research did raise more questions about how to use these technologies, however. Often, emerging technologies have theoretical rather than practical applications, so we like to play around and try to put them to work for the use cases we already have.

The Interplanetary File System (IPFS) aims to surpass the HTTP protocol in order to build a better web by using peer-to-peer (P2P) technology. Just like BitTorrent, the idea is to host multiple copies of web pages and online content across multiple nodes. If the majority of the internet worked this way, IPFS posits that the web would become decentralised, increase opportunity for content publishers and reduce cost.

As such, we’ve created a thinned-down version of our website at ipfs.ethicalpixels.com where we continue to experiment with automated web deployments to IPFS. Other decentralised hosting technologies exist, so we’ll have a look at these too.
